At the end of January 2013 in an unprecedented effort Frederik Paulsen reached the South Magnetic Pole, located at 64’01′S 136’8′ .
Successful completion of this expedition made the Head of the Pharmaceutical company Ferring the first man to reach eight poles of the planet.
Indeed, each hemisphere has four poles: the geographical pole, where the axis of rotation of the Earth meets the surface, the magnetic pole, a point where the end of a compass points downwards, the geomagnetic pole, the point where a theoretical dipole, tilted about 10’ with respect to the Earth’s rotation axis, intersects the Earth’s surface, and the pole of inaccessibility, the most remote point from any land or geographical features that could provide access.
It took Mr. Paulsen thirteen years, which included many other polar expeditions, to complete this collection of poles. The last one in the series - the magnetic south pole (which like its northern counterpart is constantly on the move) - was reached at the third attempt.
